The Ghana Youth Federation (GYF), on 6th August, launched its Eastern Regional Federation and outdoored the region’s Interim Regional Executives, before 79 youth leaders drawn from all 33 districts of the Eastern Region. The Eastern Region sensitization and launch event for the rollout of District and Regional Youth Federations was held at the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council in Koforidua, and forms part of a nationwide effort by GYF to establish District and Regional Federations built on the region’s existing network of youth-led and youth-focused organisations registered with the National Youth Authority (NYA).
The turnout of 79 participants representing all 33 districts of the Eastern Region was a strong signal of the appetite among the region’s youth-led and youth-focused organisations to be part of a single, coordinated federation, rather than operating as separate, disconnected groups.
The high point of the ceremony was the formal outdooring of the Eastern Region’s Interim Regional Executives, who will lead the region’s mobilisation efforts ahead of the formation of District Federations across all 33 districts. In their acceptance address, the newly outdoored executives called on the youth leaders present to rally behind them and support the work of delivering the Federation across the region, describing the mandate ahead as a shared responsibility rather than one for the leadership alone.
A representative of the Regional Minister for the Eastern Region, Hon. Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, delivered the keynote address as Guest of Honour, admonishing the youth present to rally behind a single, unified voice, noting that a united front is what gives the youth the standing to meaningfully engage political and government actors on the issues that affect them. Her charge echoed a theme that ran through the day’s proceedings: that a fragmented youth voice is a weaker one, and that unity is a precondition for influence.
Speaking on the overview of GYF and the nationwide Federation rollout, the President of the Ghana Youth Federation, Sherif Ghali, told participants that the launch marked a moment the country’s youth had long been waiting for.
“We have been waiting for a unified voice for a long time — now we have it. Let us unite and contribute to national development. The success of this Federation takes all of us.”
Mr. Ghali used his address to walk participants through GYF’s mandate, the Federation’s national governance structure, and the rationale for anchoring the Eastern Region’s rollout on organisations already registered with the NYA, rather than building new structures from scratch.
With the Eastern Region’s Interim Regional Executives now outdoored, attention turns to the districts. In line with GYF’s nationwide rollout process, District Youth Assemblies are expected to follow across the Eastern Region’s 33 districts in the coming weeks, leading toward a Regional Youth Assembly to formally constitute and elect the Eastern Regional Federation’s substantive leadership. This was confirmed by Ali Ibraheem, National Coordinator of the Federation.
